Annalysing a film poster

      INSIDIOUS;

The film poster 'insidious'; its not the house that's haunted', is aimed at promoting the release of a horror film. This film is based on a 12 year old boy who is mentally ill and has a spirituality body. The whole film is based on this boy in a house which everyone thinks is haunted but it actually turns out to be something else. The family are not aware of this and try there best to help him. (released in 2010).

Firstly, the use of colors on the film poster is a contrast of dark black and a cloudy grey mysterious color contrasted together, the use of these colors may connote the fact that their might be a evil and spiritual rivalry. The use of the bright red color on the door denotes the evil and a sense of big danger behind it. It makes the reader want to know what is behind the door due to the way smoke is coming out of it and how its such a bright color that part of the film poster stands out. The way the boys eyes are a really dark black color with grey pupils it connote the evil side of him. Similarly, the use of the tag lines in contrasting may connote the power of evil among at the evil groups, for example the bold bright red connotes evil,danger,wrath.

However, the boy is seen in the center of the film poster reinforcing that he has a important and main role in the film, The way he stands out on the whole poster the audience and straight away recognize that he plays the important role in the movie. The first visual aspect that the audience would capture would be the boys eyes as you can see in his eyes it has a image of a ghost or a evil spirit this connotes that their is something wrong with him or he may mentally disturbed which must mean he is evil. This connotes suspense it makes the reader, it would be a bit obvious that it is very strange that their is a image of a ghost in the boys eyes the audience would want me read and know more about it then. That composes that their is surely something wrong with him. But the eyes really contrast with the background of the film.

Furthermore the facial expressions of the boy and his body language clearly shows that he is evil the way he is looking directly at us connotes fear and mystery within the audiences mind. The way his

Interestingly, the use of the framing  in the film poster may suggest that the specific character of the movie has a big impact in the poster. The use of the title is in larger at the bottom of the poster it emphasis the impotence of the film as a whole. The sub heading 'its not the house that's haunted' lures us in wanting to know more about what the hidden story is behind the movie itself making it intriguing and mysterious. Also the way it is written makes the audience want to watch it and know more about it, "its not the house that's haunted" sub heading also connotes fear in the audiences minds

  1. WWW: Good, basic analysis, linking techniques to the likely/intended effect on the audience.

    EBI: Include a section where you consider other aspects of the mise en scene (clothing, setting, lighting, etc.).

  2. The lighting of the film poster is high key lighting because more fliter lights are used in the poster, this effect appears more realistic and depict a stormy day. However their is also low-key lighting used in the poster because their is back lights and this effect produces strong contrasts of light and dark on the house. The boys face has low key lighting as he has shadows on this face. Also the boys face is white and stands out. For this they have used top lighting because this makes the film stars look more glamourous. On the other hand the miss en scene of the film poster sets the mood of a scence and off clues to the character and theme.
