Paranormal activity 4 is a horror genre movie. The target audience for these types of movies would bee mostly teenagers over 16+ as this is quite a frighting movie which is not suitable for young children. Many scenes of this trailer creates enigma code for the audience which creates suspense for them and this makes the audience want to watch more and more of it. Section A question response

Identify and outline the main differences between the UK and US film industry and how those films are promoted. How are independent films promoted? Collect any facts and figures you could use in the exam.

The UK film industry

The United Kingdom has had a significant film industry for over a century. While film production reached an all-time high in 1936, the 'golden age' of British cinema is usually thought to have occurred in the 1940s, during which the directors David Lean, Michael Powell, and Carol Reed produced their most highly acclaimed work. Many British actors have achieved international fame and critical success. Some of the films with the largest ever box office returns have been made in the United Kingdom, including the two highest-grossing film series (Harry Potter and James Bond). The identity of the British industry, and its relationship with Hollywood, has been the subject of debate. The history of film production in Britain has often been affected by attempts to compete with the American industry.

The UK film industry use Lottery funds to nurture and invest in a diverse mix of first-class film-makers UK-wide; to discover and develop new talent; and to support the production of a wide range of films that will enrich British film culture and define Britain and its storytellers in the 21st century, for the benefit of audiences at home and abroad. They support UK distributors to help ensure that the best British and specialised films connect with a wide range of audiences across a range of platforms throughout the UK. They support sales companies who are premièring new UK films at key international film festivals and markets. The also invest in skills across the film sector and support inward investment and film exports, helping the industry to remain competitive, especially on the global stage.
The US film industry
The cinema of the United States, often generally referred to as Hollywood, has had a profound effect on cinema across the world since the early 20th century. Its history is sometimes separated into four main periods: the silent film eraclassical Hollywood cinemaNew Hollywood, and the contemporary period. While the French Lumière Brothers are generally credited with the birth of modern cinema, it is indisputably American cinema that soon became the most dominant force in an emerging industry. Since the 1920s, the American film industry has grossed more money every year than that of any other country.

ANALYSIS OF DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD;

TITLE OF PUBLICATION; is placed right at the top of my magazine so that it is easily visible, when stacked with other magazines. As it makes it stand out, I have made the title of publication in big and bold so it catches the reader attention and is more visible then other magazines. This is obscured by the cover image - allowing, both for design and flexibility and a knowing sense of recognition on the part of the 'loyal' audience. My title of publication of this magazine is called 'a step back' as it is a souvenir magazine, but as it is quite long I have put it as the a is in small on the left and ‘step’ is in big as magazines normally have one word as there title, also I have put the back going down so it takes less space. This is useful as there is therefore not that much going on and I don't want their too be too much text as it's only a front cover. It's placed in the top so it's easily visible. The typography fits in line with the whole context as it's not too loud or too quite it's just right. I wanted to show the tension and diverse emotions so that's why I went for this type of typography.

CENTRAL IMAGE; as like other magazines I also tend to employ a single, strong central image which serves to ‘anchor’ the cover i.e. provides it with weight and focus, and helps to establish my magazines core values and identity. This magazine is aimed both at males and females as the model on my magazine is a girl. The way that she is posing shows she is depressed and shows that she has just come back from a bad past. The way she is giving direct mode of address to the audience tells them that she is talking to them and makes them feel this magazine is for them. I think this will be engaging towards the audience as they will looking at the trailer already be familiar with the character. I employed a singly, strong central image which serves to anchor the cover and it helps establishes the magazine's core values and identity. Using for example, the mouth and eyes is useful as it's the most expressive part of the face.

INSTITUTION: For the magazine E4 is the institution to inform this to the readers I have put it in big on the top right hand corner, this is beneficial as E4 is a programme designed for teens to adults. So identifying this it would instantly attract teen audiences. I think it's beneficial as E4 helps promote the teen series 'A step back'. As evidently it's not well known so to have E4 on their would enhance and make our programme more known, as already E4 is well known. I will be colouring it in the same colour as E4 to make the icon stand out to the preferred target audience.

TAGLINE; my tagline of my magazine is placed beneath the title of publication and is called ‘an unexpected journey’. This is a short catchy phrase, intended to ‘sum-up’ the magazines image and to stick in the readers mind. This also gives away the plot of the teen drama as it says unexpected journey. I went for this as it describes the series in a whole connoting that life is not going to be the same, as she will be facing hard consequences showing glimpses of reality. This will allow the audience to assume several questions and get their mind set thinking which would want them to perhaps read the magazine. After the title I put the tagline underneath in an obviously smaller font this is to that audiences are clear and can therefore work out it is the tagline.

Double page Article

So rashmi, how was the whole experience for you?
Well It wasn’t a good experience, i could tell you that for sure. I have never come across anything like this before everything was just so unusual. This has really been an unexpected journey for me. I have also tried to move on from my past, but it doesn’t seem to let me go. Today has been a terrifying day for me. I had met someone I didn’t want to meet. Someone that I wanted to stay away from just doesn’t let me go. What can I do? I have never come across a situation like this in life. Where I don’t know what to do.  I’ve never been so terrified in my whole life. I wish this was all a dream. Why does my past keep following me? Why can’t I let go”.
How did you feel on your first shoot?
I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was a very unpleasant feeling, I was very nervous and terrified when I found out what I had to do. As this was my first shoot I had no idea how it was going to be like. However with the support of my fellow team members I felt much better. They were very helpful to me and I felt satisfied. This wasn’t really something I had looked forward to. All thanks to my team I feel much better.
What do you think of your other character “lily”?
At first I didn’t know who she was and was really scared to talk to her. But once we started to work together I seemed a bit better and comfortable as she was very friendly and helpful as she built my confidence. She was very strong when she spoke and she felt very confidence, this was something I could learn from her.
Do you think you have changed after doing your first series?
Well it’s only been my first series, I know I may seem different on the set, but I am quite different from everyone else. If I would say, then yes I think I have. But in a good way, after doing this series it has helped me build up my self-confidence as i was a very shy person before this. After doing this series it has helped me to be more social with others.
What plans do you have for future? & what advice would you give to your fans?
Well I want to carry on what I love doing best, and that is to act. Be a star and be a inspiring role model for my fans. I want to carry on acting on the stage. As I enjoy working with other people. They inspire me to do well; also my fans help me to do more and more for them. In future I would want to achieve something big, being the biggest star on E4 would be the best dream for me ever. My advice for the younger generation boys and girls would be to always listen to what their heart has to say. To always follow their dreams as nobody can stop them from achieving what they want. This is what I done, since I was little I always wanted to appear on TV, when i got the chance. I went for it, and that’s what I want to tell everyone out there to always look for opportunities and give it a go. As one little thing can change your life completely the way it has changed mine. I have lived each day like there’s no tomorrow. I have no regrets for anything as everything happens for a reason. What i would like to say to my fans is that if you fall. Don’t just give up. Get up and face the upcoming challenges that life brings. Each and every moment will be worth living. This is something i had learnt from my friends and family and I would like to advise this to all my friends and my fans out there. NEVER GIVE UP YOUR DREAMS. What you dream is who you are!

MAGAZINE FRONT COVER AND DOUBLE PAGE

I employed a singly, strong central image which serves to anchor the cover and it helps establishes the magazine's core values and identity. Using for example, the mouth and eyes is useful as it's the most expressive part of the face.

As evidently it's not well known so to have E4 on their would enhance and make our programme more known, as already E4 is well known.

COLOUR SCHEME;  In order to avoid becoming too busy and difficult to decode, I stuck to a limited colour scheme it allows it to feel more relaxed and provides a particular 'vibe' which is effective. To make my magazine stand out more I used 3 main colours to attract my target audience. The colours I used are red, black and purple. I have used red and black as I think it symbolises love and also black symbolises hate. These are two main words that link to this teen drama which I am promoting to the audience. As you can see there is also a bit of blue in there to attract few males as I want both of them to notice the new teen drama. Also these colours are generally felt to work well together and to provide a particular ‘vibe’ for my magazine front cover. By combining these colours I am trying to create an impression to the audience that might ‘feel right but be extremely difficult to place into words. I have used red for my title of publication as red is the colour that stands out the most to the audience and catches there attention as red has a kind of feeling when you see it and automatically drags you in.

SELL LINESThere are text placed around the central image to advertise the content of the magazine in a whole, there are larger sell lines and smaller ones. The larger ones I did I wanted to connect it towards the 'central image' as this is an example of convention allowing the audience to become accustomed. For example, I wrote 'RASHMI SHARMA' in bold so the audience directly looks at it underneath it I wrote 'exclusive interview'. So as to say there employs a balance and again there is therefore not that much information which could bore the audience, especially when aiming it at teenagers they read something which attracts them; having big letters.

BAR CODE/PRICINGfor straightforward selling purposes I've used the price '£1.99' as I want to show it's not expensive especially prior being the fact its women/teens. However, I've put it small so it doesn't compromise integrity. Also I have put this on the top left corner so it is visible and have put it in bold.

QUOTEI wrote a quote next to the central image to show what the person is thinking and it’s useful as it allows the audience to engage too. I too noticed in many souvenir magazines that they had quotes and it had me enticed. Therefore I used one, it's a simple one saying ‘I’ve never been so terrified' with a sad face on the protagonists face. This is useful as the two connect in an evident way but not only that it moves the audience to think what made her so terrified? Therefore they'd want to turn to the page and find out.

SCENE FRAMES: I have added two screen frames on the right one beneath the other and wrote ‘two unexpected scenes from a step back,’ this gives away two shots of the scenes in the teen drama showing what/how it looks like. This is highly anticipating as most teens like reading or visually seeing stories ahead as it really intrigues them and keeps them going. So therefore I came up with the idea to have this as it will mentally and visually engage them as they will be visually seeing it but when they also read it will be emotionally good

FLASH; I have put flash text everywhere around my magazine so it is visible for my audience to see some headlines. As I have put on the bottom right corner I have put ‘NEW’ so the audience is able to see that this magazine is brand new. I have also at the bottom of the magazine stated that this is an exclusive ‘souvenir magazine’ and that it holds an exclusive interview of Rashmi Sharma. Furthermore I have also stated the ‘a step backs’ website so the audience can easily go and view it and see some clips.
