18 questions


1.All the Institutions involved in the production of Fish Tank. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was.

  • Coffee Films first came into being in 1996 as an underground collective of friends, artists and musicians living around Kent. Working with an array of cheap S-VHS and Hi-8 consumer camcorders and editing tape to tape the group made a wide range of largely experimental films and videos on zero-budgets. A little over 15 years later and Coffee Films is a well established British independent film production company which has screened worldwide, won critical acclaim and reached into seven figure budget filmmaking.   •   Coffee films; over 16 years the Coffee Films have experimented across a range of different film making styles and also approaches. They were born into an underground indie film world of the S-VHS and tape-to-tape linear of editing that they have embraced and mini DV explosion also with NLE editing, the HDV boom that have followed and into the array of cameras that are available today with their recent projects.
  • In the immediate future coffee film's slate is targeted in three primary areas of drama/thriller ($2m psychological thriller Lucid shoots in Scotland in 2013), documentary (music doc The Death and Resurrection Show on controversial band Killing Joke is out later this year) and genre (several projects currently in development for 2013 shooting), but more than anything they aspire to be creators of ambitious, high quality independent films
  • DNA Films was founded by Andrew MacDonald and Allon Reich, it is known for its brilliant deal making. DNA films is behind some of the most distinctive UK films of recent years. DNA films was the recipient of large amounts of the lottery cash soon after the creation of the UK film council in 1997. They went on to strike a joint venture with Fox Searchlight which yieleded films about 28 weeks later and the last king of Scotland.
3. Out of the three Production Companies you have researched, which do you see as most successful and why?

  • i think the coffee films have been most successful because they have produced the most movies in a few years also all their movies have been a success. because Coffee Films first came into being in 1996 as an underground collective of friends, artists and musicians living around Kent.   • Their overall budget which took to produce fish tank was about $3 million

  •      Mech warrior took £5 million pounds to make and was released in 2002
  • The inbetweeners movie had a budget of £5.3 million and was released in 2011.
  • Fish tank had £3 million pounds to make and was released in released in 2009
  • Ted had £5 million pounds to produce and was released in 2012
  • The dark knight rises took 5.5 million and was released in 2011
6. How was Fish Tank funded?

  • Fish tank was funded £6 million pounds

7.Research one other way that British films are funded. Are there any similarities or differences?

  • British film is funded by film fun and they support film makers in the UK who are emerging or world class and capable of creating distinctive and entertaining work
  • They also get innovation fund and this supports projects that help UK film make a successful transition into the digital age.
  • They also get Film Export fund and this aims to enhance the export opportunities for British films at key international film festivals
8. What is the target audience for Fish Tank?

  • The target audience for fish tank is mostly older teenagers aged between 16-25 years 

9. Research the mainstream 16–25 youth cinema market and decide which 3 genres are most targeted at them and justify your decisions with your research.
  • the main stream for 16-25 years youth genres are horror, comedy and also romantic. horror because teenagers and young adults enjoy horror movies as they want something which is interesting to watch and frighting. also you can be able to watch this at night with your friends. They enjoy watching comedy because everyone likes having a laugh whether its with your family or your friends and this makes everyone come closer as everyone would enjoy it. Teenagers and young adults also like watching romantic as they could watch this with someone really close to them such as their boyfriends/girlfriends which is currently the most popular genre.
11. What is the role of a film distributor? Are there any differences between distribution in the US and UK?
  • A film distributor plays an very important role, he is an individual who is responsible for releasing films to the public either theatrically or for home viewing such as DVD/VIDEO. he also creates the marketing and circulation of movies in theater however, films have different distributors and this is depended on how much their budget it for e.g. if you have a high budget you are most likely to have a big distributor then low budget films would have low.
12. How was Fish Tank promoted (when it was released in 2009)?
  • Fish Tank was promoted at 62nd Cannes film festival in France, May 14, 2009.
13. Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?

  • Fish tank was made with a low budget as it had very less equipment's used and money used to produce a high-quality movie and you can tell this by the way they have made the movie look that is a low budget movie. However a big budget blockbuster would have much more equipment than the low-budget movies as they have more money to produce their production furthermore the similarities are that they both try to make the best out of their movies however big budget blockbusters also have a much better and expensive location then low-budget movies.
14. How does the trailer for Fish Tank hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques.

  • the trailer shows how a teenager at the age of 15 is living her life with many problems around her this makes the questions have questions on why she is behaving that way and what problems she might be having we are also identifying and see the point of view for the fatale (female) and how her facial expressions are and how she reacts to her life. The lighting is also effective.
15. Analyse the trailers for 2 different films (from different genres). Are there any differences in the way they hook the audience into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify at least 2 similarities and 2 differences.
diary of a wimpy kid
Diary of a wimpy kid is a kids movie it is based on children who like to have a bit of fun and enjoy enjoy comedy, this movie contains a lot of humorous scenes which children would like to see. The target audience will be only aimed at young kids as the movie contains little actors which children like to see. Also it captures their attention as it shows a lot of different scenes. It also has a high key lighting which makes the movie more fun to watch.
Paranormal activity 4
Paranormal activity 4 is a horror genre movie. The target audience for these types of movies would bee mostly teenagers over 16+ as this is quite a frighting movie which is not suitable for young children. Many scenes of this trailer creates enigma code for the audience which creates suspense for them and this makes the audience want to watch more and more of it. They also capture the audiences attention by showing them scary scenes which would make the movie more interesting for them
